Four Pool Records Fall as Stevens Rolls to 153-88 Win Over Montclair State in 11-12 Opener
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 15, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s swimming team broke four De Baun Aquatic Center pool-records en route to a convincing 153-88 win over visiting Montclair State University in the season-opener for both school on Saturday afternoon. The Ducks had the fastest time in all 16 events on the afternoon.
Junior Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), sophomore Brian Ginebaugh (Belmont, Mich.), junior Daniel Munt (Raleigh, N.C.), and sophomore Tyler Hessler (Southbury, Conn.) started the day with a pool-record time in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking a 1:37.12.
Stevens swept the 1,000-yard freestyle with junior Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) placing first (9:54.15), freshman Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.) taking second (9:56.95), and rookie Carlos Blandon (Miami Beach, Fla.) finishing third (10:21.25).
Sophomores Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.), Conor Arcuri (Beaverton, Ore.), and Elijah Davis (Broomfield, Colo.) went one-two-three in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.14, 1:51.64, 1:52.12), while Charriez, Hanak, and senior captain Ben Watkins (Michigantown, Ind.) did the same in the 100-yard backstroke (52.65, 54.14, 59.67). Hanak’s time was also a new De Baun record.
Ginebaugh won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.47, and junior John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.), freshman Jack Rees (Temecula, Calif.), and sophomore Mitchel Epperly (Mahwah, N.J.) swept the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.79, 2:03.41, 2:07.11). Hu’s time was the Ducks’ third pool-record on the day.
Hessler and Munt went one-two in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.84 and 22.41, while Huyett and junior Derek Smith (Boise, Idaho) placed first and second in the 100-free (48.67, 49.08). Hanak’s 1:59.46 won the 200-yard backstroke. He was followed by Noga (2:01.80) and Elford (2:06.56).
Hu’s second win of the day came in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.60. Ginebaugh and senior captain Mark Bagniewski (Cranford, N.J.) took second and third (2:20.26, 2:22.26).
Stevens swam the rest of the day’s races in exhibition but Benham’s 4:56.17 would have been good enough for a win in the 500-yard freestyle, while Rees would have won the 100-yard butterfly with a 53.81. Charriez had the fastest time in the 200-IM (2:01.49) as did the 400-yard freestyle team of Huyett, Munt, Smith, and Hessler. In the 400-free relay, the Ducks set a new pool-record with their 3:13.89.
