Stevens Cruises to Season-Opening Win over Montclair
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 15, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team cruised to a 160-94 win on Saturday at the De Baun Aquatic Center in the season-opener for both schools. Stevens set a pair of new pool-records and had the top time in 16-of-16 events on the afternoon.
Sophomore Louise Moores (Mukilteo, Wash.), freshman Brittany Geyer (Brunswick, Ohio), freshman Sharon Rooker (Forest Grove, Ore.), and junior Hayley Hatfield (Dallas, Texas) started the afternoon strongly with a pool-record in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking a 1:51.72.
Freshman Nicole Miller (Peoria, Ill.) won her first collegiate event, clocking an 11:10.82 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Senior captain Kim McCaffrey (Pequannock, N.J.) placed second with an 11:12.25 and sophomore Megan Lisbon (Woodbridge, Va.) was third (11:29.02).
Hatfield and junior Marissa Douglas (Cumberland, R.I.) took first and second in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 2:00.85 and 2:01.30, respectively, while Rooker won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.51.
Geyer earned a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a 1:10.18, and sophomore Anne Fodor (Bethlehem, Pa.) followed in second with a 1:15.64. Senior Sian Pearson (Foothill Ranch, Calif.), freshman Kayleigh Barrows (Satellite Beach, Fla.), and McCaffrey went one-two-three in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.87, 2:23.49, 2:23.80).
Freshman April Lawson (Corona, Calif.) earned her first career win in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.36. Junior Allison Henning (Idaho Falls, Idaho) notched a third-place finish in the same race with a 26.20.
Hatfield carded a 54.41 in winning the 100-free, with junior Natalie Fitz (Fairfax, Va.) taking second with a time of 57.12. Lisbon recorded the second De Baun record of the day with a 2:13.28 in the 200-yard backstroke. She took first place and was followed by sophomore Brie Sherer (Detroit, Mich.) and her 2:22.67.
Geyer and Fodor went one-two in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.87, 2:43.62), while Pearson and Miller (5:16.89, 5:32.87) did the same thing in the 500-freestyle.
The Ducks swam the rest of the afternoon’s events in exhibition but would have earned three more wins. Moores’ 1:00.01 would have won the 100-yard butterfly and Douglas’ 2:14.81 in the 200-yard individual medley would have as well. Fitz, Moores, Miller and Pearson clocked a winning time in the final event of the afternoon – the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:41.84).
