Nazareth stuns W&J, 2-0

WASHINGTON, PA – Visiting Nazareth College upset Empire 8 frontrunner Washington & Jefferson College 2-0 Saturday afternoon in field hockey.  Nazareth improves to 3-10, 2-3 in the Empire 8 after shutting out the Presidents for the first time this season.  The Presidents fall to 8-2, 3-2 in the Empire 8 conference. 
 
The Golden Flyers had two early first-half goals from Kailee O’Hara and Maria Martini  O’Hara put Nazareth on the board just 4:46 into the game and was assisted by Lindsey Smith.  At 18:11 Martini collected her own rebound off the pads of the President goalkeeper Harley Straub to slam home her first goal of the season. 
 
Shannon Winney played all 70 minutes in goal for Nazareth and recorded two saves in the final 10 minutes of the game to earn her first career shutout.  After calling a timeout with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game, the Presidents controlled the ball in their offensive end of the field.  They took five of their seven shots and had four penalty corners in the final 18 minutes of the game but were unable to convert. 
 
Straub had one save in the first half allowing both goals for the Presidents and Shelby Colyer played the final 35 minutes and made one save.  The Presidents had a 7-6 edge on shots and both teams had seven corners.
