Stevens to Host Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championship at West Point
WEST POINT, N.Y. (October 22-23, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team will be the No. 1 seed as it hosts the Empire 8 Tournament from October 22-23 at the Malek Courts and Lichtenberg Tennis Center on the campus of the United States Military Academy. The Ducks enter the postseason undefeated with a 10-0 record.
Joining Stevens at the 2011 Empire 8 Championship will be No. 2-seeded Ithaca College (7-1, 6-1 in the Empire 8), Nazareth College (No. 3 / 5-4, 5-2 E8) and St. John Fisher College (No. 4 / 6-5, 4-3 E8). In the final match of the regular season, Stevens ended Ithaca’s seven-year, 57-match conference winning streak to earn the top seed in the Empire 8 Tournament for the first time in school history.
Both conference semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Stevens will take on fourth-seeded Fisher, while Ithaca and Nazareth face off on the other side of the bracket. The matches will be played until a decision is secured, i.e., the first team to earn five victories ends the match.
The semifinal winners will face off in Sunday’s Empire 8 Final. The Championship Match is scheduled for 10 a.m. and will also be played to decision.
All matches are scheduled for the outdoor Malek Courts, with the indoor Lichtenberg Tennis Center serving as an option in inclement weather.
