Stevens Splits on Day Two of Volleyball to Earn Empire 8 Tournament Berth
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (October 22, 2011) – In the final day of the second Empire 8 Conference Crossover at St. John Fisher College, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team split their pair of matches with Elmira College and Ithaca College. The Ducks redeemed an early season loss with a 3-2 win over the Soaring Eagles, but were swept by the Bombers. Stevens has clinched a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 postseason tournament but will wait to see where it will be seeded after the conclusion of today’s crossover.
In the five-set triumph over Elmira, 12-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-25, 15-11, sophomore Chrissy Dickinson (Issaquah, Wash.) paced the Ducks with 14 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Dickinson also chipped in three blocks and two digs.
Junior Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) posted a solid all-around performance with 13 kills, two aces and two assists. Kowalska also tallied team-highs of 12 digs and six total blocks in the victory.
Ducks’ sophomore Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) was the team’s key distributor with 35 assists. Gates recorded 11 digs and two digs as well. Fellow sophomore Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) added eight kills and six digs.
Senior Kate Janes (Warwick, N.Y.) performed well offensively and defensively with seven kills, six digs and five total blocks for Stevens. Freshman Reanin Glah (West Chester, Pa.) helped out with 11 digs and three kills.
In the setback to Ithaca, 25-12, 25-15, 25-18, Kowalska led the Ducks with nine kills and eight digs.
Gates and senior Andrea Bucko (Union, N.J.) combined for 18 assists. Gates dished out 10 to go along with four digs, while Bucko handed out eight.
Dickinson added to her day with five kills, while Janes and freshman Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) totaled five kills and five digs. Janes recorded two kills and three digs, while Hall posted the opposite, three kills and two digs.
