Alfred, N.Y. (10/23/2011) – The Utica College men’s soccer team secured its third 10-win season over the course of the last five years by edging out Empire 8 Conference foe Alfred University 2-1 Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers, winners of five in a row, moved their record to 10-5 overall and remained in the hunt for a bid to the conference tournament by increasing its record to 2-3 in the E8.

Sophomore Kevin McAllister continued his break out year when he netted his team-best eighth goal of the year in the 11th minute.  Senior captain Jonathan Wood assisted on the game’s first tally.  Wood currently leads UC with a team-best six assists this season.  Wood now has 39 career points (15 goals, nine assists).

UC took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Jonathon Peterson tallied his fourth goal of the year at the 28:50 ledger.  McAllister assisted on what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Alfred added a late goal off a penalty kick from the foot of Tony Gai, but it proved to be too late for the Saxons, who fell to 5-8-2 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Utica sophomore goalie Anthony Caruso stopped three shots in his 22nd career victory.  So far this season Caruso and the Pioneer defense have helped hold opponents to just 15 goals.

UC returns to action on Sunday when they finally complete the championship game of the Utica Men’s Soccer Invitational against visiting Hunter College.    The game was originally scheduled to be played on the first weekend in September, but mother nature had other things planned, as a lightning storm rolled in and canceled the championship game.
