Elmira Claims Regular Season Volleyball Title; Will Host Championship

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Volleyball team used a 2-1 weekend at St. John Fisher College in the second weekend of the Empire 8 Crossover play to take home the regular season title. The Soaring Eagles ended conference play at 6-1 overall, finishing one game ahead of conference foes Stevens, Nazareth and St. John Fisher.

Overall in Empire 8 play the Purple and Gold have remarkably dropped just four sets over seven matches. EC owns straight set, 3-0 victories, over Nazareth, St. John Fisher, Alfred and Utica. The Soaring Eagles have defeated Ithaca and Hartwick in four sets, and it’s only loss came to Stevens in five sets this past weekend.

Sasha Zavadska ’13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School), Brittany Raykoske ’12 (Johnstown, NY -- Gloversville) and Taryn Rumsey ’14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) have led the charge for Elmira. Zavadska leads Elmira with 113 kills in conference play, while and Raykoske have combined to pound out 134 kills in E8 play. The trio have combined for 148 digs and 39 service aces.

Molly Short ’13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) has been an important added piece for Elmira this season. She has contributed an astonishing 230 assists in conference play alone, along with nine service aces and 56 digs.

By finishing first in Empire 8 regular season play Elmira has earned the right to host the postseason Empire 8 Championship Tournament. The semifinals will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1:00 and 3:30 p.m., while the championship match will take place the following day, Sunday, Nov. 6, at 1:00 p.m. All matches will be played in Speidel Gymnasium on the campus of Elmira College.
