St. John Fisher Women's Soccer Locks Up E8 Championship Bid
The St. John Fisher College women’s soccer team qualified for the postseason on Saturday with a 2-0 win over visiting Utica College at Fisher’s Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher evens its overall record at 8-8 on the year, but more importantly, the victory raises the Cardinals’ record to 4-3 in the Empire 8, good for sole possession of fourth place.
Fisher will now travel to face top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Championship. Stevens defeated Fisher 2-1 earlier this year, despite the Cardinals outshooting the Ducks, 15-9. This is Fisher’s second trip to the postseason in the last three years.
Fisher’s Chelsea Oberkrieser gave her team the lead for good with a goal in the 20
th minute of action on a breakaway. Oberkrieser scored after beating two Utica defenders to net the goal in the bottom left corner. The goal was setup by a long through-ball up the middle from Heather Konieczny.
Alexandra Rohloff added an insurance goal for the Cardinals in the 48
th minute when she settled a cross from Oberkrieser and shot for a score.
Fisher’s offense controlled the game, outshooting the Pioneers 18-3 and keeping the ball on Utica’s end of the field, leaving no work for Fisher goalie Jessica Plukas.
