Ithaca Women's Tennis Team Opens Wheeler Courts With Victory
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca women's tennis team (7-0, 6-0 Empire 8) opened the newly-constructed Wheeler Tennis Courts with a 7-2 win over Nazareth (4-4, 4-2 Empire 8) Wednesday night in Ithaca. The new facility includes six courts, bleachers, and lights and the Bombers extended their Empire 8 winning streak to 57 dual matches in regular season and postseason competitions.
The Bombers pulled out two of three doubles matches to take an early lead, with the first doubles tandem of junior Allison Young Prout School/Newport, R.I.) and sophomore Becky Guzzo (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville) earning an 8-6 win and the third doubles team of freshman Allison Vizgaitis (Fayetteville-Manlius/Fayetteville) and junior Laurel Salladay (Pinkerton Academy/Hampstead, N.H.) picking up an 8-2 victory.
Ithaca clinched the required team points with singles wins by Vizgatis, Salladay and senior Kelsey Harness (Allegan/Allegan, Mich.).
The Bombers will face fellow Empire 8 unbeaten Stevens Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J. with the conference regular-season title on the line and the top seed for the upcoming Empire 8 Championships.
