Four First-Half Goals Propel Stevens to 5-3 Win Over Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (October 8, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team improved to 3-1 in the Empire 8 and 6-5 overall with a 5-3 win over Nazareth College on Saturday in Rochester, N.Y. Sophomore Rachel Chavez scored two goals to lead the Stevens offense, while junior Marguerite Chavez and senior Jillian Price each had a goal and an assist.

Nazareth jumped on top at 15:38 when sophomore Alexis Root (Marathon, N.Y.) tallied thanks to a feed from junior Tessa Knapp (Marathon, N.Y.), but the Ducks went on to score the final four goals of the first half to take a 4-1 edge into the intermission.

Sophomore Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) knotted the game at one in the 20th minute after Price inserted to her on a penalty corner to pick up her team-high eighth assist of the season. The marker was the fifth of 2011 for Traub.

Marguerite Chavez notched her seventh goal to put the Ducks up 2-1 3:07 later courtesy of an assist from junior Mary Nikish, and in the 31st minute, Rachel Chavez recorded an unassisted tally. Price had the last goal of the first half to give the Ducks a 4-1 advantage, scoring unassisted with just 16 seconds left in the period.

The Golden Flyers (2-10 overall, 1-3 Empire 8) fought back to within on goal (4-3) when Knapp and sophomore Haley Potter (Moravia, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals 12:33 apart, but Rachel Chavez scored her ninth of the season with 43 seconds to go to seal the win. Sister Marguerite Chavez assisted the goal.

Stevens ended with a 28-11 advantage in shots and a 21-9 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Krysten Suarez made seven saves to earn her sixth win of the season.

Stevens has scored 21 goals in its four Empire 8 games, while only allowing 10 scores against.
