Pine Valley, NY-- The Elmira College Field Hockey team took the field today looking to pick up their second win of the season as they faced conference leader Utica College, who had yet to lose in the Empire 8. Despite being outshot 32-12 in the game, the Soaring Eagles were able to make one count in the overtime period and take the 1-0 victory.

The game was a back and forth battle during regulation, but no one could breakthrough into the scoring column and so the teams went to the overtime period.

In overtime, the Soaring Eagles had only 1 shot, but it was all they needed as that one shot provided the game-winning goal. After being awarded a corner, Sarah Thomassen’12 (Stewartstown, PA -- Kennard-Dale) passed the ball to McKenna Light’14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon) who took the shot and slipped it by the Pioneer goalie with just over a minute left on the clock. The Soaring Eagle defense continued their strong play for the last minute and sealed the 1-0 victory.

Elmira College was able to keep the strong Utica offense quiet thanks to stellar play between the pipes by Lauren Thomas’14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield). Thomas stopped all 32 shots she faced, including 6 in the overtime period.

The win brings Elmira College’s overall record to 2-8, but they are 2-2 in the Empire 8 and currently sit at 5th in the conference.
