Schuckers Leads Stevens Women's Soccer to 2-1 Victory Over Fisher
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (October 8, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, October 8, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team came out on top of a 2-1 decision against Empire 8 Conference rival St. John Fisher College. Stevens used two goals from senior Kathleen Schuckers to beat Fisher and lift the Ducks to a 7-3-2 overall record and 2-0-1 in the Empire 8.
Stevens jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the team’s first shot of the game on a great individual effort by Schuckers in the ninth-minute of play. Schuckers leads the Ducks with 14 points this season on four goals and six assists.
Fisher had its first opportunity to tie the game back up with two shots in a 50-second span in the 18th minute, but the first attempt sailed wide of the net and the second was blocked by the Ducks defense.
Senior Kaitlin McClymont was forced to make her first of five saves in the game on the ensuing Cardinals shot in the 22nd minute to keep the Ducks ahead. McClymont played all 90 minutes in net to pick up her sixth victory of the season.
Fisher would keep the pressure on McClymont and the Stevens defense with eight shots in the first half and finally put a tally on the board off a corner kick in the 39th minute of play.
The match remained tied throughout a majority of the final 45 minutes of action until Stevens broke the tie on the second Schuckers goal of the contest with just under five minutes left in regulation.
Schuckers’ gamewinning goal came immediately after Fisher thought it tallied its own game-winner, but an offside call nullified the score. Stevens’ sophomore Lindsay Stoll took the ball out of the net and, without hesitating, placed the ball down and pushed it up the field for Schuckers to give the Ducks a hard-fought conference victory and her second gamewinning goal of the 2011 season.
Although the Ducks were outshot, 15-9, and were on the wrong end of corners, 4-2, they still managed to tally the victory.
