St. John Fisher Sweeps Woodcliff Invitational with Win over Union
The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team went undefeated at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa Invitational with a 61-45 victory over visiting Union College on Sunday afternoon. The win is Fisher’s second-straight and second this season, bringing the Cardinals overall record to 2-2, while Union falls to 1-2 on the year.
With two minutes gone in the second half, and the score 33-27 in favor of the home team, Fisher went on a 20-7 streak over the next nine minutes to increase its lead to 53-34. Sydney Bloomstein started the run with a layup, and Portia Velasco capped it off with two made free throws.
From there, the Cardinals were able to cruise to the comfortable victory.
The score was tight for much of the first half, with Fisher holding a slim 27-22 lead at the end of the first stanza. The five-point difference was the largest margin of the first 20 minutes, as the score was mainly tied or within three points in the first half.
Velasco led the Cardinals in scoring for the second-straight game, finishing with 14 on the day. The rookie also pulled in eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Camaryn Buckner ruled the boards, pulling down a game-high 11 paired with her 13 points. Junior Jessica Krzemien added seven points and six assists, while senior Meghan Soja contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Fisher will return to action on Tuesday night in the Wendy’s College Classic. Matchups for the tournament will be announced later this evening.
