Hartwick Handles Storm
KEUKA PARK, NY- Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) had a double-double as the men's basketball team led from start to finish and defeated Keuka 72-60 on Thursday night. The Hawks improve their record to 6-0 for their best start since 1987. The Storm fall to 0-4 on the season.
Suderley had 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace the Hawks. He also dished out three assists and made three steals. Chris Ryder (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) chipped in 12 points and had eight rebounds. Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral Prep) scored 11 points and had three assists.
Cody Paige led the Storm with 21 points and had nine rebounds. Teddy Tuggles scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Conor Boyer chipped in 10 points.
Hartwick scored the opening basket and never looked back as they built leads of 11 and 14 points in the first half. A three-pointer from Blazek gave the Hawks a 36-22 lead with 3:17 left in the first but Keuka would close the gap, however, as they went on a 9-2 run to close out the half. The Hawks lead was 38-31 at halftime.
Ryder's jumper to begin the second half gave Hartwick a nine-point advantage but Paige would answer with a three-pointer to close the deficit to six points at the 19:08 mark. That would be as close as Keuka would get as the Hawks would go on a 13-2 run that put them up by 17 for their biggest lead of the game and put them in control the rest of the way. The key for the Hawks was their play in the paint as they outscored the Storm 20-12 in the second half.
"Our guys made some big plays and in the end it was another road victory for us," said head coach Todd McGuinness. "Victor Angeline (East Brunswick, NJ/Rutgers Prep) made some big three-pointers in the first half and Aaron Laing (Laurens, NY/Laurens) was good on the boards. Jared had a solid game and did a good job rebounding the ball."
Hartwick out-rebounded the Storm 42-40. The Hawks shot nearly 41% from the floor compared to Keuka's 35%.
