The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team hosted the SUNY Geneseo Blue Knights on Bobby Wanzer Court Thursday night in a Wendy’s College Classic consolation game and came away with a 51-45 win.  Fisher is now 3-3 on the season, while Geneseo moves to 2-2.

Geneseo scored the game’s opening points on a three-pointer by Meghan Prue, but it would be the only lead held by the visitors in the contest.  Fisher’s Camaryn Buckner responded with a three-pointer of her own, and the Cardinals never looked back, proven by a 17-point lead (24-7) at the 6:08 mark of the first half.

The Cardinals were threatened in the second half, as Geneseo looked to mount a comeback and got within one point with the score 31-30 early in the stanza, but Fisher, led by Buckner’s 15 points, held onto the lead.

The Cardinals led 28-20 after the first 20 minutes, led by Buckner’s 10 first-half points.  Buckner shot 4-for-5 from the field, with two three-pointers in the mix.  The home team used a 15-0 run over a span of seven minutes to build a comfortable lead, but the Blue Knights responded in the final six mintues of the half to cut the lead to eight.

Senior Meghan Soja led the game with 10 rebounds and four steals, while Buckner also added eight rebounds and four blocks.

Fisher will return to action on Saturday with it faces Empire 8 member Nazareth College in a battle for fifth-place in the 46th Annual Classic.  The game will take place at 3 p.m. at William Smith College.
