INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (December 7, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team ended 2011 ranked highly in a variety of national statistical categories, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently announced. In addition, senior midfielder and co-captain Jillian Price (West Islip, N.Y.) ended the year ranked sixth in assists per game.
Price averaged .75 helpers per outing, handing out a Stevens single-season record of 15 in 2011. In addition to Price, sophomore forward Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) ended the year 45th in the nation, notching nine this year and averaging .47 per game.
As a team, the Ducks were sixth in penalty corners per game (13.2), 14th in points per game (9.4), 15th in assists per game (2.4), 16th in scoring average (3.49), and 17th in goals per game (3.5).
The Ducks totaled 70 goals and 48 assists this year, both single-season records by wide margins as was their 188 total points. Stevens’ 434 shots and 264 penalty corners were also new single-season marks among others.
Individually, Price and senior midfielder and co-captain Mallory Swanson (Princeton Junction, N.J.) earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region accolades and Swanson was a third-team NFHCA All-American. The four-year starter was also named the Empire 8 Player of the Year.
The Ducks led the Empire 8 in scoring average, shots, goals and assists. Chavez was tied for the league lead in points (35) and points per game (1.84) and was tied for third in goals (13). Price was tops in the league in assists with Chavez checking in at No. 4
Stevens ended with an overall record of 12-8, reaching the semifinals of both the Empire 8 and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. It was the Ducks’ fifth-straight year with double-digit victories and fifth-straight season with at least one postseason victory.
