Hartwick Rolls in Season Finale
ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick women's basketball team routed visiting Elmira, 63-39, on Saturday at Lambros Arena in the final game of the season for both clubs. Hartwick finishes out the year with a 10-14 overall record and a fifth place finish in the Empire 8 standings with a 7-9 mark.
Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) led all scorers for the second straight day with 18 points. She also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Acad.) scored 16 points for the Hawks and Samantha Fox (Hartwick, NY/Cooperstown) registered a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Hawks, who led from start to finish, scored the first 13 points of the game and led by as many as 19 in the opening half. The Soaring Eagles would close the gap to eight points, 32-24, thanks to a 16-5 run to close the half.
In the second half Elmira cut the lead to seven in the first three and a half minutes, but the Hawks took command with an 18-4 run and over the next seven minutes and they led by at least 20 the rest of the way. Hartwick held the visitors to just one field goal over the final eight minutes of the game.
The Hawks dominated the glass the entire game, out-rebounding the Soaring Eagles 54-31. The 54 boards was a season-high for the Hawks and they also picked up 17 offensive rebounds.
Hartwick shot 37% for the game. The Hawks held the Soaring Eagles to 25% shooting and only 15-second-half points.
Maria Thannhauser scored 12 points, all on three's, to lead the Soaring Eagles. Becca Fretz scored 12 points for EC.
Foglia notched her second double-double of the season hitting six of 13 shots from the floor for 'Wick. Purcell hit three three-pointers to finish the season with 40. It marks the third-highest single-season total in Hartwick history.
Senior Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic), playing in her final game for the Hawks, scored nine points and added eight rebounds. She closes out her four-year career with 722 points, 387 rebounds, 97 three-pointers, and 175 steals. Her 97 three's ranks second in Hartwick history and her 175 steals puts her 7th on the all-time charts.
