Stevens Men's Swimming in First After Day 1 at UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 23, 2011) – After the first of four days at the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships in Rochester, N.Y., the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s swimming team is in first place with a team total of 342 points. The Ducks lead Ithaca College (292) and Hartwick College (249) as a total of 13 teams earned points on Wednesday.
In the Day 1 prelims, freshman Conor Arcuri started things off with a win in the 500-yard freestyle with his 4:38.02 and was backed up by senior co-captain Dan Pecoraro in third (4:39.92). Senior Evan Wilson followed with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:52.53 in his win in the 200-yard individual medley, while freshman Tyler Hessler and junior Carl Nagle took first and third in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.16 and 21.27, respectively.
Sophomore Greg Charriez, senior co-captain Matthew Preedy, sophomore Daniel Munt, and Hessler teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:33.77, more than 1.6 seconds better than the second-place squad.
Pecoraro began the finals in a big way for the Ducks, clocking a 4:37.58 in winning the 500-free, with Arcuri taking third with his time of 4:43.27. Freshman Nick Noga placed sixth and earned 24 team points (4:45.25).
Wilson earned 32 points for his win in the 200-yard IM, turning in a 1:52.06 which bettered his B-cut time of 1:52.53 in the prelims. Charriez was seventh for 23 points with his 1:57.73.
Stevens had four of the top-eight finishers in the 50-yard freestyle as Hessler was second (21.30), Preedy was fifth (21.55), Nagle was sixth (21.74), and freshman Joe Huyett was seventh (21.78).
In the final event of the day, the 200-medley relay, the Ducks placed second with a time of 1:34.32.
