Ithaca Women's Swimmers Make Three NCAA Cuts in Day 1 Prelims of State, Conference Meet
Webster, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's swimming & diving team got off to a fast start at the 2011 UNYSCSA and Empire 8 championship meet during Wednesday's preliminary session. The Bombers met an NCAA A qualifying standard, two B qualifying marks, and advanced six individuals and the 200-yard medley relay team to tonight's event finals on the opening day of the four-day championship meet.
Senior Sheila Rhoades (Dryden/Dryden) met the NCAA A cut and will be seeded first in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle after timing in at 23.42 seconds.
Ithaca advanced four swimmers to the finals of the 200-yard individual medley, highlighted by sophomore Carly Jones (Liverpool/Liverpool) who made an NCAA B cut and will be the event's top seed after clocking in at 2:06.90 in the prelims, which matches the school-record time established by Megan Hughes in 2004. Freshman Carlene Ostromecki (Boyertown/Gilbertsville, Pa.) timed in at 2:11.52, freshman Elizabeth Gawrys (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) clocked in at 2:13.06 and freshman Lauren Brundage (St. Elizabeth/Madison, N.J.) touched in 2:13.57 and will join Jones in the 200 IM finals this evening.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Ostromecki, sophomore Madi Sherry (Orchard Park/Orchard Park), Jones and senior Joanna Ferreri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) finished in 1:47.94, which met the NCAA B qualifying standard and will be seeded second in the event finals tonight.
