Devins Field Athlete of the Meet, Men’s T&F Second at NYSCTC Championships

Canton, N.Y. – Senior Kyle Devins (Ausable Valley/Peru) was named Field Athlete of the Meet after leading the Bombers to a second-place finish at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday hosted by St. Lawrence. The Bombers tallied 150 points, just 4.5 shy of the first-place team, in recording its top finish since winning the meet in the 2000-01 season.

Ithaca notched 14 individual All-NYSCTC performances and a pair of all-state team finishes in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays during day two of competition.

Devins won the long jump on Friday before claiming the triple jump title on Saturday with a leap of 13.55 meters. Both marks were ECAC qualifiers. Freshman Brennan Edmonds (Charles O. Dickerson/Ithaca) and sophomore Dan Purcell (Sauquoit Valley/Sauquoit) also placed in the triple with second- and sixth-place finishes. Edmonds hit a season-best mark of 13.33 meters, while Purcell recorded a mark of 12.92 meters.

Freshman Jarrod Monacelli (Hereford/Parkton, Md.) finished third in the pole vault clearing 4.10 meters.

Senior Jeff Wetmore (Maple Grove/Bemus Point) and Max Orenstein (Trumbull/Trumbull, Conn.) finished 1-2 in the 200 dash finals with season-best times of 22.33 and 22.39, respectively. The duo also finished atop the 55 dash standings as Orenstein placed second in 6.55 and Wetmore third in 6.63. Each of their finishes met the ECAC qualifying standards.

Graduate student William Way (Cheltenham/Glensdale, Pa.) finished third in the 3,000 run in 8:41.54, an ECAC mark, and seventh in the mile run in 4:25.47. Sophomore Nate Bickell (Annapolis/Annapolis, Md.) crossed the finish line fifth in the mile in 4:24.33.

Another pair earned All-NYSCTC accolades as junior Brian McCormick (Minnechaug/Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore David Geary (Brighton/Rochester) finished the 800 run within half a second of one another. McCormick collected a fourth-place finish with a four-second improvement on his season-best time. He finished the race in 1:59.38 and Geary was eighth in 1:59.83.

Sophomore Matt Confer (Webster Schroeder/Webster) tied his season-best time in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.93 good for fourth place and an ECAC qualifier.

Two relays closed out the day’s competition as the Bombers placed third in the 4x800 before winning the 4x400, both in season-best, ECAC qualifying manners.

Sophomore Billy Savage (Indian Hills/Oakland, N.J.), Bickell, senior Anthony Veroline (Seneca/Tabernacle, N.J.) and sophomore Matthew Kastler (Walter Johnson/Bethesda, Md.) teamed for an 8:03.61 finish in the 3,200 relay, while Edmonds, sophomore Chris Mastrosimone (Fairport/Fairport), Wetmore and Orenstein teamed to win the 4x400 closing race in 3:23.29.

Ithaca will next compete on March 4-5 at the ECAC Championships at the Armory.
