Ithaca Diver Sets Championship-Meet Record; Bomber Women Maintain Team Lead
Webster, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's swimming & diving team maintained its overall lead in the team standings after the third of four days of competition at the UNYSCSA and Empire 8 championship meet. The Bombers made three NCAA qualifying standards on the day and set a school-record in 1-meter diving. Ithaca has 965 points and leads second-place Stevens by 40.5 points.
Ithaca's women divers placed five among the top-eight in the finals of the 1-meter diving competition. Graduate student Naomi Mark (Dansville/Dansville) scored 416.65 in the finals to place first. It was a championship-meet scoring record, an Ithaca record, and also met the NCAA qualifying standard. Mark competed in the NCAA Championships in 2010.
Senior Emily Griffin (Madison West/Madison, Wis.) placed second with a score of 390.05, freshman Korie Fackler (Central Dauphin East/Harrisburg, Pa.) was fourth with a score of 387.00 and sophomore Heather Markus (Saratoga Springs/Greenfield Center) was fifth with a total of 387.00. Junior Jodi Costello (Framingham/Framingham, Mass.) placed eighth in the finals with a score of 374.00.
Sophomore Madi Sherry (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) and sophomore Carly Jones (Liverpool/Liverpool) both met NCAA B qualifying standards in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke. Sherry swam 1:05.80 and finished fourth. Jones finished fifth with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:05.95.
Three Bombers finished in the top-six places in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke. Freshman Emily Hoskinson (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake/Scotia) placed second in 59.30 seconds and freshman Carlene Ostromecki (Boyertown/Gilbertsville, Pa.) swam 59.41 to place fourth in the finals. Junior Missy Keesler (Union-Endicott/Endicott) was sixth in 1:00.04.
Ithaca also advanced two swimmers to the finals of the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Laura Goodwell (John Muir/Altadena, Calif.) placed fifth in at 2:10.70 and freshman Fiona Mancuso (Hershey/Hummelstown, Pa.) finished eighth in 2:13.81.
In the finals of the 800-yard freestyle relay, Ithaca's A-relay placed third in the state and second in the conference with a time of 7:50.56. The relay team was comprised of freshman Elizabeth Gawrys (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa), Jones, freshman Kate Sessler (Livonia/Livonia) and senior Maddie Kennedy (Head Royce/Altadena, Calif.). Ithaca's B-relay placed 19th overall with a time of 8:04.40 behind the efforts of senior Sarah Winder (Garfield/Seattle, Wash.), senior Joanna Ferreri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna), freshman Lauren Brundage (St. Elizabeth/Madison, N.J.) and Keesler.
The final day of competition begins with preliminary events at 10 a.m. and event finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Webster Aquatic Center.
