The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five as the Cardinals took home a 57-49 win over the hosting Alfred University Saxons Tuesday night.

The streak marks Fisher’s longest since the ’05-’06 season when the Cardinals finished with a 25-3 overall record.

Fisher jumped out to a quick lead on a 7-1 run over the first four minutes of play with three different players opening the scoring.  The middle of the stanza saw the teams trade leads, and the Cardinals didn't regain the advantage until just over a minute left, enabling Fisher to take a narrow 28-25 lead into the the locker room at the half.

The second half fared better for Fisher, who held the Saxons to 18% shooting from the floor.  The Cardinals never trailed in the final half, pushing their lead to 16 with 34 seconds left.  Alfred threw in last-ditch attempts to cut the deficit with lay-ups from Grace Williamson and Lyndsey Murphy in the last 20 seconds, but it wasn't enough as the clock ran down.

Meghan Soja recorded her first double-double of the season, recording 10 points and grabbing 11 boards, while Camaryn Buckner marked her fourth double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.  Colleen Maloney led Fisher with 12 points and added six rebounds, four of them on the offensive glass.

Alfred's Murphy led all scorers with 21 points.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-9 overall and 7-3 in Empire 8 contests.
