ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Phil Barera (Belmont/Belmont, Mass.) has been named to the District I College Division All-Academic Team. A center on the Bombers’ men’s basketball team, Barera was one of just five recognized on the first team and has advanced to the ballot for academic all-America honors.

Barera, a sports management/finance major, was the only Empire 8 player named to the District I team.

Ranked third in the nation for his 68.5 percent field-goal percentage, Barera has been named a player of the week this season by D3Hoops.com, the Empire 8 and ECAC Upstate N.Y.

Barera has tallied eight double-doubles this season and has twice rewritten career-highs of 38 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks. He leads the Empire 8 in scoring at 18.6 points per game and field-goal percentage, while ranking second in rebounding, blocked shots and offensive boards.

The fourth men’s basketball player honored in program history, Barera is the first to receive first-team recognition since the 2008-09 season when Jeff Bostic was recognized. A total of 138 Ithaca athletes have earned academic all-district honors over the past 14 years, including three this year as volleyball junior Kate Thoene and football graduate student David Ahonen were honored.
