Stevens Ends Dual-Meet Season with 177-109 Win Over Hartwick
ONEONTA, N.Y. (February 5, 2011) – The No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology men’s swimming team closed out the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a 177-109 win over Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon in Oneonta, N.Y. Stevens totaled 13 wins as sophomores Greg Charriez, Alex Benham, and John Hu and senior Evan Wilson all won two events on the day.
Charriez, senior captain Matthew Preedy, sophomore Daniel Munt, and freshman Tyler Hessler won the first race of the afternoon, the 200-yard medley relay, with a time of 1:35.92. Benham earned the first individual win of the day in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking a 9:54.40, and Wilson was second (9:56.86).
Senior captain Dan Pecoraro and freshman Conor Arcuri placed second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking times of 1:45.43 and 1:46.84, while Charriez and freshman Shawn Hanak went one-two in the 100-yard backstroke, touching at 53.57 and 54.84, respectively.
Wilson and Preedy finished first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.87, 1:01.48), and sophomore John Hu and junior Matthew Smith did the same in the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.75, 2:00.27). Junior Carl Nagle, Hessler, and freshman Joe Huyett swept the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, turning in times of 22.26, 22.42, and 22.47, while Huyett, Preedy, and Hessler did the same in the 100-yard freestyle (48.53, 48.57, 48.71).
Pecoraro tallied a win in the 200-yuard backstroke with a time of 1:59.41 and was followed by Hanak in second place (2:01.00).
Hu’s second first of the day came in the 200-yard breaststroke, as the sophomore touched at 2:11.96. Freshman Brian Ginebaugh took third in the event with a 2:17.52. Benham’s second victory was in the 500-yard freestyle as he recorded a 4:49.99 and Arcuri pocketed a third-place finish with his 4:54.17 in the 500-free.
Chariez and Smith went one-two in the 100-yard butterfly (53.83, 55.09) as Wilson and Hu did the same in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.17, 1:58.25).
Huyett, Hessler, Pecoraro, and Preedy turned in a winning time of 3:12.02 despite swimming the 400-yard freestyle relay in exhibition.
