Elmira Tops Nazareth 62-56 in Women's Basketball
Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College Women’s Basketball team defeated the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College Saturday afternoon in Speidel Gymnasium earning its 5th victory of the season. The contest was close throughout, but the Purple and Gold made a late second half push for the six point victory, 62-56. The win improves EC’s record to 5-16 this season and 2-10 in Empire 8 play.
The teams exchanged leads in the first half of play, with no lead reaching more than 6 points during the first 20 minutes. A late three pointer by Elizabeth Forrest ’14 (North Walpole, NH -- Fall Mountain) and a made free throw by Becca Fretz ’11 (Kunkletown, PA -- Pleasant Valley) push EC to a 26-24 halftime lead.
Elmira College was able to maintain their small lead deep into the second half until Nazareth sunk a three point shot with 8:55 remaining in the contest to go up by three. However, the Soaring Eagles were able to respond with a 14-to-5 run during the closing stages of the contest.
EC was led offensively by Fretz who registered 18 points and 5 rebounds. Maria Thannhauser ’14 (Newfield, NY -- Newfield) also reach double-figures with 16 points including three three-pointers for the Purple and Gold.
