The nationally ranked St. John Fisher College men’s lacrosse team improved to 3-0 on the year as the Cardinals defeated visiting SUNY Oswego 11-3 on Tuesday in their home-opener.

Fisher, ranked No. 21 in the latest USILA poll, took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Ryan Schmidt four minutes into the game, and pushed its lead to 4-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals led 6-0 at the end of first half after goals by Ryan Leonard and Connor Henderson.

Goalie Matt McShea, who made seven saves in the first three quarters of action, lost his shutout bid, as the Lakers scored their first goal of the game 44 seconds into the second half.

Fisher (3-0), however, regained the momentum by scoring the game’s next four goals, including two from Henderson, who finished with four on the day.

Mitch Ritchie totaled four points on two goals and two assists, while Schmidt totaled a goal and two assists.

Leonard scored two goals on the day, while Jeff Wester and Kyle Denhoff also scored for the Cardinals.

Senior Erich Rassow, who entered today’s game ranked second nationally in faceoffs won, went 9-for-16 from the X.

Fisher, who has won 24 of its last 27 games, dating back to 2008, will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Clarkson University.

The Cardinals are 23-2 in the month of the March over the last four seasons.
