Banker and Kohanski Propel Pioneers Past Potsdam

Utica, N.Y. (3/12/2011) – Senior Tammy Kohanski and junior Katlyn Banker combined for seven goals and 13 points total as the Utica College women’s lacrosse team cruised to a 12-6 victory over visiting Potsdam State Saturday afternoon on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Kohanski, who is the College’s all-time leading scorer, tallied six points on a game-high four goals and two assists, while Banker capped the afternoon with a game-high seven points on three goals and four helpers.
The Pioneers, who opened the season with a loss against nationally-ranked No. 11 Union, evened its record up at 1-1, while Potsdam dropped to 1-2 on the year. The Bears Carley Richards and Sierra Langkammerer each totaled two goals to pace the visitors.
Junior goalie Shelby Barbay stopped nine shots in her first victory of the season between the pipes for UC. Freshman Janet Campo came off the bench and registered her first two collegiate goals for the Pioneers, while Lily Fleskes, Julianne Schultheiss and Maria Santucci each recorded their first goals of the year.
After falling behind 2-1 in the first 8:20 of the contest, the Pioneers rattled off five straight goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead with 9:20 to go in the first half of play. Each team went onto to net one goal a piece before the half and UC took a 7-3 advantage into intermission. Three of Kohanski’s game-high four goals came in the first 30 minutes of play.
Potsdam scored the first goal of the second half from the stick of Kathleen Frear, but Utica answered with five straight goals in a span of 14:16 to put the game out of reach. Langkammerer netted two goals in the final 5:04 of play to cut the Utica advantage to six goals but it proved to be too late as the Pioneers earned the 12-6 victory.
Utica cleared 50% of its opportunities, while holding the visitors to just 5-of-14 on the ride. Lauren Gilmore, Kaela King and Banker each totaled a team-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers for UC, while Barbay and Campo chipped in with two ground balls of their own.
Kaci Milligan and Jen Chmiel each registered two saves while splitting time in net for the Bears. Chmiel also added four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
