St. John Fisher Uses Nine-Goal Run To Defeat Oneonta

The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team came through with a 20-10 win over visiting SUNY Oneonta on Friday, thanks to a pivotal 9-0 run early in the second half.

Fisher (1-1), led 9-7 at the half, but Oneonta (0-3) pulled to within a goal at 9-8, less than one minute into the second period.

The Cardinals took control after that and scored the game’s next nine goals to take an 18-8 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.  The first four goals during the run came in a 3:12 span with Meg Merriam making it 13-8 with 24:56 left.

Merriam led the Cardinals with four goals and three assists, while Mary Stimson totaled six points on four goals and two assists.  Courtney Clare tallied three assists and two goals, while Melissa Leonhard added three goals and one assist. 

Jackie Maynard (two goals, two assists) enjoyed a four-point day, while Bridget Alberts and Taylor Hughes also scored two goals.  Shannon McDermott also scored in the win.

Merriam led the Cardinals with seven draw controls, while Clare won five.

Leonard finished with a game-high seven ground balls.
Caroline Trpcevski stopped four shots in the first half, while Molly Naylon played the final 30 minutes and made one save.

Fisher will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will host nationally-ranked Union College.
