Nazareth runs by WNEC, 17-5
NORWALK, Conn. -- Nazareth broke open a close game Monday by outscoring Western New England 10-1 in the second half on the way to a 17-5 romp over the Golden Bears in a non-conference men's lacrosse game.
The Golden Flyers, ranked 16th nationally in Division III, won for the third straight time to improve to 3-1 overall. WNEC is 2-2.
Nazareth scored the game's first three goals and never trailed, but the Golden Bears stayed close for amost of the first half as Nazareth led 7-4 at halftime. Nazareth dominated the third quarter with five goals and after WNEC scored early in the fourth quarter, Nazareth scored five more times.
Senior attackman Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar scored five goals and added one assist and senior middie Adam Nauerth added a career-best four goals. Junior attackman C.J. Estes scored twice and had two assists and senior middie Scott Castle also scored twice.
Jacobs-Ferderbar scored two of his goals in the first quarter as Nazareth built a 4-1 advantage. Freshman Trevar Haefele opened the scoring with his first career goal off a pass from Doug Milano-Johnson and Estes followed less than two minutes later with junior attackman Nate DeLone assisting.
WNEC scored the first two goals of the second quarter to trim Nazareth's lead to 4-3, but Castle delivered a man-up goal off an assist from Jacobs-Ferderbar to enable Nazareth to regain its two-goal cushion. Goals by Nauerth and sophomore Brian Wright followed before halftime.
Nazareth outshot WNEC 10-4 in the third quarter with five of those shots finding the mark. Jacobs-Ferderbar scored twice with Nauerth, Estes and Milano-Johnson also scoring.
The fourth quarter was highlighted by the first career goal for senior middie Joel Tully. Nauerth also had two more goals with Jacobs-Ferderbar and Castle also contributing.
Nazareth had a 36-28 advantage in shots and a 41-25 edge in ground balls. Senior defenseman Mitchel Frey and senior midfielder Kyle McLean each had seven ground balls and senior defenseman Brian Orr had five.
Junior Grant Williams played most of the minutes in goal and had nine saves.
