Ithaca Men's Lacrosse Team Routs Oneonta, 13-6
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca men’s lacrosse team (3-1) had nine players score in the Bombers’ 13-6 victory over visiting Oneonta (1-5) in its inaugural game in Higgins Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The teams were tied up at 1-1 at the 6:30 mark of the first period before Ithaca rattled off five consecutive scores to lead 6-1 with 1:13 lingering in the half. Oneonta notched its second goal of the game with 14 seconds left in the second stint for a 6-2 halftime score in favor of the Bombers.
Ithaca held the Red Dragons scoreless in the third period and scored four of its own before adding to the run in the fourth quarter to make it five unanswered. Oneonta answered by scoring four of the game’s final six goals, but it was not enough as Ithaca claimed a 13-6 home-opening victory.
Junior Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) tallied his second straight hat trick to lead all scorers. Senior Michael Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) and junior Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) each added a pair of scores, while senior Jay Lucas (Fox Lane/Bedford Hills) dished out a game-high two assists.
Freshman Jake Long (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) and sophomore Andrew Bruce (De La Salle/Lafayette, Calif.) each recorded a pair of points on a goal and an assist.
Freshman Kevin Sherman (Notre Dame Academy/Middleburg, Va.) tallied eight faceoff wins for the Bombers and scooped up five ground balls. Silipo and sophomore Marc Roberts (Hendrick Hudson/Montrose) each forced a pair of turnovers for the Blue and Gold.
Senior David Gal (Loomis Chafee (Conn.)/Amherst, Mass.) claimed the victory in goal for the Bombers making 15 stops and collecting a game-high six ground balls, while sophomore Luke Robinson (Fox Lane/Bedford) made one save after relieving Gal of his keeper duties with 2:32 remaining in the contest.
Ithaca outshot the Red Dragons 35-34 and collected 32 ground balls to Oneonta’s 23.
Ithaca will next host Maritime on Saturday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
