Ithaca Women’s Lacrosse Propels Past Buffalo State, 13-10
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca women’s lacrosse team (2-1) propelled past visiting Buffalo State (3-2), 13-10, in the Bombers’ inaugural game on Higgins Field Tuesday afternoon. Ithaca outscored the Bengals, 7-4, in the second period to break the 6-6 halftime stalemate.
A trio of Bombers recorded hat tricks to lead Ithaca to victory in its home season-opener. Sophomore Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow), senior Ali DeCirce (Binghamton/Binghamton) and junior Nicole Borisenok (Albany Academy for Girls/Watervliet) tallied three goals apiece, while four others recorded one goal each.
After netting the game’s first score at 26:26, Ithaca fell behind 2-1 before rattling off three consecutive to take a 4-2 lead at the 21-minute mark. Buffalo State answered with a pair of goals to knot the game at 4-4, but a free-position goal by sophomore Kim Armbruster (Montville/Boonton, N.J.) put the Bombers’ ahead, 5-4, with 3:03 left in the first frame. A minute later the Bengals made it a 5-5 game, but Rivas answered with her second of the game before a Buffalo State score finalized the halftime tally at 6-6.
Buffalo took the lead early in the second stint but the Bombers would score seven of the next eight goals to put the game out of reach. DeCirce made it a 7-7 game at 15:57 before Rivas, sophomore Sam Whitney (Portsmouth/Rye, N.H.) and Borisenok each capitalized on free position opportunities.
Buffalo broke its 16-minute scoring drought to bring the game to 10-8 at 9:42. DeCirce, Borisenok and freshman Katie Long (Ithaca/Ithaca) each went unassisted over the next five minutes of action to take a commanding 13-8 advantage with just 3:11 lingering on the clock. Buffalo pieced together two more scores to close out the game at 13-10 in Ithaca’s favor.
Rivas won a game-best five draws and junior Siobhan Sullivan (Franklin/Franklin, Mass.) collected a game-high five ground balls for the Bombers.
Sophomore Jess Worthman (Hauppauge/Commack) made 10 stops in goal to earn the win in goal for Ithaca.
