St. John Fisher Softball Sweeps Medaille
The St. John Fisher College softball team improved to 9-3 on the year with a doubleheader-sweep of visiting Medaille College on Tuesday. Fisher pounded out 28 hits to score 21 runs in the two, five-inning games. The Cardinals, who host University of Rochester at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, won the first game 9-1 and earned a 12-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Mavericks got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning, but wouldn’t see home plate again as the Cardinals got the bats going.
Fisher took the lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Harmon singled to the shortstop to score Megan Zoerb, putting Fisher on the board, before Carissa Carlson stepped up to rip a three-run home run over the center field fence, scoring Jamie Harmon and Leanne Merchant.
Fisher owned both the offense and defense after that to end the game early when Kayla Goodberlet singled to left field to score Jennifer Vanek for the five-inning win.
Danielle Leone earned the victory from the plate, allowing only four hits and fanning six batters to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Game Two: Fisher 12, Medaille 0 (5)
Fisher hit four home runs in the game, including two from Merchant. The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, scoring seven of the runs with two outs. Merchant hit a three-run shot in the second inning and added a solo home run in the fourth frame after Harmon started the inning with her first career homer.
After Jessica D’Angelo singled, Sarah Fordyce hit a two-run shot to left center.
Sarah Stefanon earned her first win of the season, striking out eight batters in the shutout.
Merchant finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI. Fordyce went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Harmon scored three times.
Vanek slapped an RBI-triple in the third, while Goodberlet scored two runs.
