Saxons Top Elmira for First Empire 8 Win of Season

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Elmira College, 13-10, Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field.

The Saxons outshot the Soaring Eagles 48-34, and held a 31-25 advantage in groundballs. AU led Elmira 10-7 at the half, as each team netted three goals in the second half.

Senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) scored a game-high seven points (three goals, four assists) and freshman attack Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) scored two goals and assisted on another to pace AU (8-2, 1-2 Empire 8). Junior attack Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker (SUNY Delhi), junior midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), and freshman midfielder Derek Green (Pitssburgh, PA/The Kiski School) each netted a pair of goals. Sophomore midfielder Matt Hodnik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) scored a goal and an assist.

Freshman midfielder Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) (one goal) went 19 of 26 on face-offs and scooped up a game-high nine groundballs. Sophomore defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (four groundballs) and freshman defender Tony Juliano (West Seneca, NY/Nichols) (two groundballs) each caused a game-best four turnovers.

Adam Walker netted three goals and one assist, and Rick Acorn scored two goals and tow assists to lead the Soaring Eagles(2-4, 0-3 Empire 8.

Sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) started in net for the Saxons making 10, and Dave Buccino went the distance in goal for Elmira and finished with 15 saves.
