Elmira Takes Two on the Road against Golden Flyers
Rochester, NY -- EC Softball took two games on the road as they defeated the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in Empire 8 play. Elmira rallied late in game one for a convincing 7-0 win and rolled in game two, winning 13-1 in 5 innings.
Game one was a pitcher’s duel as both teams were held scoreless through 5 innings of play. Elmira would break up the scoreless game in the 6th inning as Erin Pruess ’12 (Glen Falls, NY -- Glen Falls) singled to lead the inning off. Pruess would advance to second on the next at-bat and would then score Elmira’s first run on an Alex Andrade ’13 (Fairhaven, MA -- Bishop Stang) single to left field.
After tossing 5 innings of shutout ball, Casandra Fontinell ’11 (Shoreham, NY -- Islip) came off the mound as she allowed two runners to reach in the bottom of the sixth. She allowed 5 hits and struck out another 4. Rookie talent Alex Puglisi ’14 (Shelton, NJ -- Trumbull) took the mound in relief. With runners on first and third she would strike out the first three batters she saw to end the inning without allowing a run.
The Elmira offense would respond to the great defensive effort in a big way as EC put 6 runs up in top of the seventh inning. In the seventh Elmira would put their first three batters on base. With the bases loaded Teszalyn Culp ’12 (Drayton, ONT -- Norwell District Secondary) worked the count for a walk, brining in one run. Pruess would then drive in one as she singled to left field. Nazareth would get an out while still leaving the bases juiced. Stephany Fontinell ’11 (Shoreham, NY -- Islip) would then drive in two as she singled to center field, giving EC a 5-0 lead. Nazareth would get another out before Caitlin Roman ’11 (Verbank, NY -- Millbrook) ripped a double to center field, scoring two more runs for the Soaring Eagles. Puglisi would then take the mound and shut down the Golden Flyers in the seventh to earn the save and seal the win for the Soaring Eagles.
Game two would be much more eventful as Elmira cruised to a 13-1 win in just 5 innings of play. In the game Sarah Tarquino ’13 (Schwenksville, PA -- Perkiomen Valley) and Pruess would combine for 7 RBIs on 3-of-5 hitting. Puglisi would get the start and earn the win in game two as she allowed one run on three hits, and struck out one batter.
With the two wins Elmira improves to 4-4 (3-1 E8) on the 2011 season.
