Mitchell Scores Five as Elmira Claims First Empire 8 Victory of Season
Oneonta, NY -- The EC Women’s Lacrosse team earned a hard fought win as they defeated E8 foe Hartwick College, 13-12. Elmira put up 10 goals in the first half to pace them in the close win.
Elmira opened the game by jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first fifteen minutes of play. EC would outscore the Hawks 5-to-4 to end the half ahead 10-6. In the half Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold) would score 4 goals and assist on another. Mitchell’s< last goal of the half came with just one second remaining.
Mitchell would score her fifth goal of the game to kick off the second half but Hartwick would respond with four straight goals, brining the score to 11-10 in favor of the Soaring Eagles. Samantha Risi ’14 (Coopersburg, PA -- Southern Lehigh) would put an end to the Hawks’ run as she score on a free position shot at the 13:57 mark to put Elmira ahead by two.
Hartwick would again rally as they put up two straight goals to tie the game at 12-all. With the game coming to a conclusion, Meghan Pass ’12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy) would score the game winner with 2:16 left. Mitchell would assist on the game winning goal.
Mary-Kate Gellerman ’13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana)> earned the win in net for the Soaring Eagles. She made 12 saves in addition to grabbing 5 ground balls in 60 minutes of action. Mitchell would end the game with 5 goals and 2 assists while Risi chipped in another 3 goals and 1 assist.
