Cox Sets Record In Fisher's Split With Utica
The St. John Fisher College baseball team split its doubleheader with visiting Utica College on Sunday. In the first game, Fisher’s Josh Cox set the College-record for strikeouts in a game with 16, as the Cardinals posted a 10-6 victory. In the nightcap however, Fisher’s 18-game winning streak vs. Utica came to end, as the Pioneers held on for a 9-7 win. Fisher (16-6 overall, 6-2 Empire 8 Conference) returns to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday and will host Medaille College.
Junior pitcher Josh Cox set the Fisher single-game record for strikeouts with 16 in the win. It was an interesting game to say the least. Fisher led 10-0 with the two outs in the top of the seventh and final inning, with Cox pitching a one-hitter. The game, however, turned into a save situation for Ryan Trauger, who retired the only batter he faced to preserve the win. Cox allowed three hits and four walks in the win, raising his record to 4-1 on the year. He struck out at least two batters in every inning but the sixth.
Offensively, Ben Bostick was the only multi-hit player for Fisher. The sophomore finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Steve Karnyski and Ben Ward also scored two runs in the win.
The Cardinals, who trailed 8-1 going into the bottom of the third inning, sent the tying run to the plate in their final at-bat, but a diving catch in right field ended the game. Leo Fusilli went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Ross Langevin also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ward was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Bostick singled twice and scored two runs. Matt Klock also finished with two hits, while Chris Roeder doubled in a run and scored a run.
