Ithaca Men's Tennis Blanks Hartwick
Oneonta, N.Y. - The Ithaca men's tennis team (6-3, 4-0 Empire 8) remained perfect in Empire 8 play and convincingly defeated Hartwick (0-5, 0-3 Empire 8) by a 9-0 score Thursday afternoon. The Bombers didn't drop a single set in the process.
The third doubles team of sophomore Kyle Riether (Neshaminy/Langhorne, Pa.) and senior Les Bowden (Middletown/Middletown) started the dual with an 8-1 victory. They were followed off by the first doubles team of senior Josh Rifkin (Homestead/Ft. Wayne, Ind.) and junior Jimmy Newton (Florida Virtual School/Englewood, Fla.) who were 8-5 winners in their match. Rifkin and Newton are ranked fifth in the Northeast Region among doubles teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The tandem of freshman David Andersen (Hastings/Hastings on Hudson) and sophomore Josh Berggrun (Orange/Moreland Hills, Ohio) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at second doubles.
Ithaca went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets.
The Bombers will set out on a busy weekend of play, including a road match Saturday at The College of New Jersey and two dual-matches Sunday, beginning with a 9 a.m. match at Cornell followed by a 1 p.m. match against Utica.
