Ithaca Unleashes Offense on Alfred, Bombers Tally 17-4 Victory

Alfred, N.Y. – Junior Nicole Borisenok (Albany Academy for Girls/Watervliet) was one of 10 Bombers to score, with a game-best four goals, as the Ithaca women’s lacrosse team (7-4, 5-1 Empire 8) upended host Alfred (2-8, 0-5 Empire 8), 17-4, on Saturday afternoon.

Ithaca jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening four minutes of play before Alfred brought the game within two, 3-1 at 21:29. The Bombers then unleashed six unanswered before a Saxon goal closed out the half with a 9-2 Ithaca advantage.

Sophomore Michelle Avery (Brien McMahon/Norwalk, Conn.) netted a free position goal to spark a five-goal Bomber streak in the second half. Alfred scored two of the game’s final five goals as Ithaca powered to a 17-4 victory.

The Bombers, who took 40 shots to the Saxons’ six, had five multi-goal scorers. Borisenok led the squad with four, while sophomores Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) and Kim Armbruster (Montville/Boonton, N.J.) and seniors Katie Hurley (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) and Rachel Maley (Newtown/Sandy Hook, Conn.) each added a pair.

Hurley had a game-best three assists and Rivas added two and a game- and career-high six draw controls.

Sophomore Jess Worthman (Hauppauge/Commack) claimed the win in goal making one save in 52:46, while freshman Brittany Romano (Penfield Central/Penfield) made her collegiate debut seeing 7:14 of action.

Rivas and seniors Abby Peterson (Mount Mansfield Union/Underhill, Vt.) and Emily Finn (Bishop-Brady/Concord, N.H.) each collected a game-high four ground balls.

Borisenok, Maley and Armbruster rattled off a trio of goals to open the game before Alfred got on the board. Borisenok again struck on an Armbruster assist before Rivas netted a pair for a 6-1 advantage at 12:51.

Borisenok continued the dominance with two of her own prior to freshman Katie Long (Ithaca/Ithaca) recording a free position goal at 4:43. Alfred made it a 9-2 game at 2:35, a score that stood through intermission.

Avery opened the second stint, netting the first of five straight Ithaca scores. Hurley followed with an unassisted goal, before Rivas found the crosse of Armbruster for a 12-2 lead that forced a running clock. Borisenok assisted Hurley at 24:04 and Hurley found Maley at 22:45 for a 14-2 gap.

Following Alfred’s third of the game, sophomore Sam Whitney (Portsmouth/Rye, N.H.) scored one of Ithaca’s four free position goals of the game. A nine-minute scoring silence followed before junior Racquel Lividini (Mamaroneck/Mamaroneck) capitalized on an assist from freshman Maya Gebhardt (Cortland/Cortland) for a 16-3 advantage. Alfred struck once more, but it was a Gebhardt score that finalized all scoring at 17-4.

Ithaca scooped up 32 ground balls to the Saxons’ six and won 15 of 23 draw controls.
