Pioneers Snap Four-Game Skid With Win over Elmira

Utica, N.Y. (4/16/2011) – Senior Tammy Kohanski of the Utica College women’s lacrosse team totaled a game-high eight points (five goals, three assists) to lead the Pioneers to a 14-8 victory over Empire 8 Conference rival Elmira College Saturday afternoon on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers (5-6, 2-4 E8) snapped a four game losing streak headed into their final home game of the regular season on Sunday.
The Pioneers jumped out a 6-0 lead over the course of the first 26:03 of play behind three goals from Kohanski, two from junior Maria Santucci and one from freshman Julia Primps (first collegiate goal). Elmira (4-6, 1-4 E8) was able to mount a small comeback and cut the Pioneer lead in half, 6-3, by the time the first half horn sounded. All three of the Soaring Eagles first half goals came in the final 3:02 of the half.
Elmira scored two of the first three goals in the second half to cut the Pioneer lead to 7-5 with 24:18 to go. Colette O’Brien led the way for Elmira with a hat-trick on the afternoon. UC essentially put the game out of reach by scoring four straight goals in a span of 4:10 to take a commanding 11-5 lead with 19:13 to go in regulation. Elmira was able to net three goals in the final 17 minutes of the contest, but UC tacked on three of their own to earn the six goal victory.
Junior Katlyn Banker netted two goals for UC, while freshman Janet Campo added two goals of her own. Senior Kelley Fullerton chipped in with one goal, while classmate Julianne Schultheiss added two assists.
Emily Zimmerman added three goals for the visitors and Emma Scheppers netted one goal and tallied one assist.
Sophomore goalie Stephanie Belanger stopped six shots and picked up five ground balls in her first victory of the season. Kohanski added six caused turnovers, while Kasey Lederle caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.
Mary Kate Gellerman stopped six shots in net for the Soaring Eagles and Emily Zimmerman added a game-high five draw controls. Rebecca Matturro caused six turnovers and added six ground balls.
