Utica Field Hockey Participates in Heart Run and Walk
Utica, N.Y.
Utica, N.Y. – (3/25/11) The Utica College women's field hockey team donated $425 to the American Heart Association on March 5, after running three miles at the 2011 America’s Greatest Heart Run & Walk.
“It is both exciting and important for the team to be involved with the Heart Run because it is such a meaningful event for the Utica community,” said second-year head coach Sarah Bergmann. “The team did a great job running, had a ton of fun, and represented UC Athletics extremely well.”
The Pioneers finished last season with an 8-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. Key returners for UC include goalkeeper Monica Storms, defender Jessica Ahearn, midfielders Kim Martin and Ally Sanders, and attackers Mallory Marino and Rebecca Corsones.
Storms returns as the team's No. 1 goalie after recording a 78.2 save percentage last season, while Ahearn returns as a 2010 Empire 8 Honorable Mention and the most experienced defender. She scored six goals last season and made four defensive saves.
Mariano will lead the way on the offensive end. She is the team’s top returning scorer after posting 22 points last season (nine goals, four assists). She was also named the colleges’ representative on the Sportswoman of the Year team.
They will begin the 2011 season on Sept, 3 when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to face St. Lawrence University.
