St. John Fisher Women's Lacrosse Wins Emipire 8 Opener over Elmira
The nationally ranked St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team won its Empire 8 Conference season-opener on Friday as the No. 19 Cardinals posted a 21-6 win over Elmira College at Corning’s War Memorial Stadium.
Fisher (5-2), who led 4-3 midway through the first half, scored five straight goals to take a 9-3 lead with just over eight minutes left in the opening period. Elmira (3-3, 0-1) scored the game’s next two goals, but Fisher outscored the Soaring Eagles 11-1 over the game’s final 35 minutes and didn’t allow a single goal in the entire second half.
Mary Stimson led Fisher with a career-high six goals, while Melissa Leonhard scored five goals.
Senior Courtney Clare totaled five points on two goals and three assists, while classmate Jackie Maynard scored twice and chalked up two assists.
Meg Merriam and Bridget Alberts each scored two goals. Jill Zerrillo finished with one goal and one assist, while Emily Bryerton (goal) and Taylor Hughes (assist) each registered a point.
Shannon McDermott led the Cardinals with six ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Leonhard and Clare also forced three turnovers.
Freshman goalie Caroline Trpcevski stopped five shots to earn the win in net.
