Balanced Attack Leads Pioneers to 8-5 Win over Hartwick

Utica, N.Y. (4/2/2011) – The Utica College women’s lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first 19:31 of the contest and never looked back as the Pioneers earned an 8-5 victory over Empire 8 Conference foe Hartwick College Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers’ (4-2, 1-1 E8) offensive attack featured four players with two points or more including Tammy Kohanski’s team-high four points (two goals, two assists).
Hartwick (5-2, 1-1 E8), which snapped its two game winning streak, opened the scoring with a goal just 3:10 into the contest but the Pioneers’ responded with six straight in a span of 15:02 to essentially put the game out of reach.
The Hawks did make a run by scoring four straight goals over the course of 20:16 to cut the Pioneers’ lead to 6-5 with 16:50 to go in regulation. Fortunately for Utica senior Lily Fleskes scored on a free position shot and Kohanski added a goal with 7:22 to go to seal the victory. Fleskes finished the afternoon with two goals, while junior goalie Shelby Barbay stopped five shots in her fourth victory of the season.
Julianne Schultheiss added two assists and one goal, while Katlyn Banker chipped in with two goals. Senior Kelley Fullerton also added her second goal of the season for the Pioneers. Fullerton caused a team-high four turnovers, while Banker added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman defender Keala King registered two caused turnovers and two ground balls for UC. Sophomore goalie Stephanie Belanger saw eight minutes of action to open the second half and stopped two shots in that time frame.
Hannah Kennedy netted two goals for Hartwick and Erin Doyle added two assists. Erica Scicchitano, Ali Sisco and Brittany LaVaute each netted one goal for the Hawks. Senior goalie Jen Kaye stopped nine shots in the loss, while LaVaute and Morgan Galipeau each caused three turnovers.
Utica outshot the visitors 22-18 on the day but the Hawks earned an 18-13 ground ball advantage.
