Ithaca Wins Third Straight with 14-8 Victory at William Smith

Geneva, N.Y. – The 23rd-ranked Ithaca women’s lacrosse team (9-4) powered to its third straight win with a 14-8 victory at William Smith (5-7) on Tuesday afternoon.

The teams went goal-for-goal early before Ithaca unleashed six consecutive scores to lead 8-3 with 6:11 lingering in the first frame. William Smith added a pair of goals before intermission to cut the deficit to three at the break.

The Herons made it a 9-7 game seven minutes into the second stint, but Ithaca again answered with a flurry of goals for a 14-7 lead with 2:15 remaining in play. The Herons scored one final goal to finalize all scoring at 14-8.

Junior Nicole Borisenok (Albany Academy for Girls/Watervliet) and senior Ali DeCirce (Binghamton/Binghamton) paired to score nine of the Bombers’ goals, while sophomore Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) and senior Katie Hurley (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) each added two goals and two assists.

Senior Abby Peterson (Mount Mansfield Union/Underhill, Vt.) and sophomore Jess Worthman (Hauppauge/Commack) tallied game-highs of four ground balls, while sophomore Michelle Avery (Brien McMahon/Norwalk, Conn.) recorded game-highs of four caused turnovers and three draw controls.

Worthman notched the win in goal for Ithaca having made seven saves.

The Herons kicked-off the back-and-forth play with a goal at 27:29. Avery won the ensuing draw control that led to Hurley scoring on a Rivas feed just 35 seconds later. William Smith immediately answered before Hurley found the crosse of DeCirce to make it a 2-2 game at 24:07. The Herons netted another at the 20-minute mark to regain a one-goal edge.

Borisenok claimed her first of the day at 16:07 on a pass from Hurley to kick-off six straight Ithaca goals. DeCirce followed at 10:12 before Borisenok rattled off three goals within three minutes, broken up only by an unassisted Rivas score.

William Smith cut the Bombers’ gap to 8-5 moments prior to the break.

The Herons again got on the board first in the second half, but Hurley reinstated a three-goal advantage seconds later. William Smith responded with another, but sophomore Nikki Dahl (The Wellington School/Columbus, Ohio) answered with the first of five consecutive Bomber goals that put the game out of reach for the Herons.

DeCirce made it an 11-7 game at 15:06 on a free position shot before Borisenok, DeCirce and Rivas each went unassisted to take a 14-7 advantage at 2:15. The Herons would net one more, with 45 seconds remaining on the game clock, in suffering their second straight loss.

The Bombers outshot William Smith, 36-20, and won 14 draws to the Herons’ 10, while both squads picked up 15 ground balls.
