St. John Fisher Earns Sweep over Nazareth
The St. John Fisher College Cardinals earned a sweep over host and cross-town rival Nazareth on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, Fisher improves to 8-2 in Empire 8 play and 24-8 overall on the season.
Game one:
Fisher 4, Nazareth 0
Leanne Merchant led the way to the win for Fisher in game one, ripping two home runs in a 4-0 victory over the Golden Flyers.
Merchant put the Cardinals on the board with her first home run of the day in the top of the fifth inning.
The Cardinals added three runs in the seventh to secure the win. Jamie Harmon singled to reach, while Carissa Carlson reached on an error. Merchant stepped up, slamming her second home run to left field to score Carlson and freshman Alicia Vann, who pinch ran for Harmon.
Danielle Leone earned the win from the mound, improving to 11-4 on the season. The sophomore pitcher scattered four hits and retired as many batters.
Game two:
Fisher 13, Nazareth 1
Fisher jumped to a 6-0 lead over the third and fourth innings before the Golden Flyers responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but a seven-run spree in the top of the fifth would secure the win in the nightcap for Fisher.
Kayla Goodberlet took the reigns, recording a two-RBI single in the top of the third and adding a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to lead with five RBI in the game.
Merchant tacked on her third home run of the day, a two-run shot to kick off scoring in the fifth.
Freshman Jennifer Martin went a team-best 3-for-3 from the plate, recording a double and an RBI.
Sarah Fordyce and Jennifer Vanek each recorded two hits in the win as well.
Sophomore Sarah Stefanon earned the win for Fisher, allowing only two hits, no runs, and fanning five batters to improve to 9-2 on the season.
Fisher returns to action tomorrow as it hosts Empire 8 opponent Alfred University in a doubleheader at the Fisher softball complex slated for a 1 p.m. start. The Cardinals will honor their seniors as they play in their last regular-season games of their careers.
