Kohanski Breaks School Record with Eight Goals in Utica Loss at Oneonta

Oneonta, N.Y. (4/20/2011) - Senior Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, N.Y.), who is the College's all-time leader with 262 career points, netted a school-record eight goals in the Utica College women's lacrosse team's 15-12 loss in non conference play at Oneonta State Wednesday afternoon. Junior Katlyn Banker netted one goal and added two assists for the Pioneers (6-7). Kohanski now has a team-high 65 points (45 goals, 20 assists) this season. Oneonta (3-10) was led by Rebecca Monteith's five goals.

Kohanski opened the scoring on the day with her 38th goal of the season just 5:25 into the contest to give Utica an early 1-0 lead. Oneonta answered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage in the next 6:23 of play before Kohanski netted her second goal of the evening to cut the Red Dragon lead to 3-2. Oneonta responded again with three straight goals to take a 6-2 lead with 10:47 left in the first half of play.

Junior Maria Santucci netted her eighth goal of the season for Utica at the 7:03 marker to cut the Pioneer deficit to three goals, but once again the Red Dragons maintained their lead with two straight goals in a span of 1:05.

UC wrapped up the first half with three consecutive tallies, one from Santucci and two from Kohanski, as the Pioneers trailed 8-6 at the half.

Kohanski and senior Julianne Schultheiss opened the second half with a bang to knot the score at 8-8 with 24:57 remaining in the game. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, Oneonta rattled off three straight in just over three minutes to take the lead right back.

Both teams went on to score four goals in the final 16:28 and the Pioneers found themselves trailing by three as the final horn sounded.

Kohanski went 3-for-4 on free position opportunities and also netted eight of her nine shots on goal. She added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Banker chipped in with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while freshman Kristen Beckman added one assist for the Pioneers. Junior goalie Shelby Barbay stopped six shots, including five in the second half, and she also tallied four ground balls.
