Bombers’ Men’s Lacrosse Team Stifles Alfred, 18-1; Clinch Empire 8 Bid
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca men’s lacrosse team (9-6, 5-2 Empire 8) stunned visiting Alfred (10-5, 2-5 Empire 8), 18-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Higgins Stadium to clinch a bid to the Empire 8 Championship Tournament in its home finale.
The Bombers rattled off seven goals in the first stint before adding three more for a commanding 10-0 lead at halftime. Alfred opened the third frame with a goal just 35 seconds into play before Ithaca added eight more to win the game 18-1.
The last time Ithaca held a team to one goal was on April 28, 2010 with a 13-1 trouncing of the Saxons.
The Bombers outshot Alfred, 41-18, collected 33 ground balls to the Saxons’ 14 and won 15 of 22 faceoffs.
Sophomore Andrew Bruce (De La Salle/Lafayette, Calif.) opened the game with a pair of unassisted goals and went on to tally three on the day. He was joined by freshman Jake Long (Upper Dublin/Ft. Washington, Pa.) with a game-high three scores.
Ithaca had 12 goal scorers, as juniors Devin Weinshank (Long Beach/Long Beach) and Brian DiBetta (John Jay/Katonah) each added two goals. DiBetta also won 11 of the Bombers’ faceoffs.
Junior Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) dished out a game-high two assists and was one of three Bombers with a contest-best four ground balls. Freshman Andrew Kristy (Fairport/Fairport) and junior Chris Duncan (Regis Jesuit/Denver, Colo.) also collected four each.
Senior David Gal (Loomis Chafee (Conn.)/Amherst, Mass.) secured the win in goal making nine stops in 55:56 of action, while sophomore Luke Robinson (Fox Lane/Bedford) made one save in the final 4:04 of game time.
