St. John Fisher Women's Lacrosse Wins ECAC Title
Top-seeded St. John Fisher College scored 11 of the game’s final 12 goals and defeated No. 2 Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham 18-6 in the final game of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday at Fisher’s Growney Stadium.
With the win, Fisher finishes the year with a 13-5 overall record. It is the third post-season title for the Cardinals in the last five years.
With the game tied at 3-3, just under 10 minutes into the game, Fisher scored the game’s next four goals to take the lead for good. Three of the goals came from senior Mary Stimson, who was named as the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player.
Stimson finished the day with five goals. Her first goal of the day made her just the third player in Fisher history to score 50 or more goals in a season.
The Devils (13-7) made it 7-5 with 2:35 left in the first half, but Fisher’s Meg Merriam scored on a free-position shot with .4 seconds left in the half to give the Cardinals an 8-5 advantage going at the break.
The second half was all Fisher. The Cardinals scored eight straight goals, including four consecutive goals from freshman Taylor Hughes. The Devils’ lone goal of the second half came with 9:14 left in the contest.
For Fisher, senior Jackie Maynard totaled seven points on three goals and four assists in her final game. Fellow senior Courtney Clare totaled six points on two goals and four assists. She finishes the season with a College-record 45 for the year.
Merriam ended the day with four points on two goals and two assists, while Melissa Leonhard also scored twice.
Goalie Caroline Trpcevski stopped four shots on the day, while defenders Julia Lauria and Logan Barnard each caused two turnovers. Shannon McDermott won a team-best five draws.
