Springfield Powers Past Frostburg State, 48-24, In Season Opener
Springfield, Mass. -- September 10, 2011 -- Senior quarterback Josh Carter ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more in leading the Springfield College football team to a 48-24 victory over Frostburg State this afternoon at sunny and warm Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. It was the season opener for the Pride, now 1-0, and the first Empire 8 game for Frostburg State, now 1-1.
It was very much an offensive affair, especially in the first half, and even more so in the first quarter, which ended 21-14 in favor of SC. By the half, it was 28-24, SC.
In the second half, Springfield shut out the Bobcats, although Frostburg certainly had its chances.
Carter, who hails from Marlborough, Mass., wound up with 189 yards rushing and two TDs on 17 carries. He also passed for 82 more yards and two TDs. He was 2-for-4 with no interceptions and was not sacked.
Carter had plenty of help. Sophomore fullback Brodie Quinn (Pittsfield, Mass.) added 151 yards rushing and one TD on 17 carries. Junior halfback Andy Bean (Coventry, R.I.) had 92 yards and one TD on just four carries. And junior halfback Mike Davis (Madison, Conn.) had 46 more yards rushing on just three carries.
Overall, Springfield finished with 604 total yards on 57 plays, while Frostburg finished with 411 yards on 85 plays. The difference was "big" plays. Springfield had touchdown runs of 93 yards, 76 yards, 71 yards, and 33 yards. Their touchdown pass plays were of 17 and 65 yards.
