Stevens Womens Soccer Shuts Out Ursinus 3-0 at Engineering Cup
HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 10, 2011) – In the first game of the eighth annual Stevens Engineering Cup, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team topped the visitors from Ursinus College, 3-0. The Ducks tallied two goals in the first six minutes of the match to earn the decisive victory and level their record at 2-2 this season.
Stevens did not take long to register a tally on the scoreboard, as sophomore Bridgette Barden fed senior Kathleen Schuckers with a pass down the middle of the field to split the Ursinus defense just 54 seconds into the match and forced a 1-v-1 with the Bears goalkeeper.
Schuckers then assisted on another Ducks goal off a corner kick with 39:41 remaining in the first half. Schuckers’ pass was handled by junior Paige Allen, who finished off the delivery into the top of the net to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
Just over 11 minutes after the second Stevens marker, Schuckers nearly netted her second goal of the contest off a header with the Ursinus goalkeeper out of position, but a Bears defender turned the attempt away with a key team save and preserved a 2-0 match.
In the second half, head coach Jeff Parker emptied his bench and received solid performances from freshman Georgia Johnson and sophomore Kyle Stephens. With 19:04 left in regulation, Stephens found Johnson on a run down the middle of the field and rewarded Johnson with a great pass in stride to beat Kara DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J.) and notch the third Ducks goal of the contest.
Senior Kaitlin McClymont and junior Teegan Kelly split time in net for the Ducks to combine on the shutout. McClymont was not forced to make a save in the first 45 minutes of action to pick up her second victory of the season. Kelly faced five shots and stopped one in the second half.
Stevens outshot the Bears, 14-9, in the contest, with a distinct advantage in the first half, 9-4. The corners were nearly a draw, as Ursinus took one more, 3-2. All three corners came in the second half.
The Ducks return to De Baun Athletic Complex tomorrow for the second day of the Engineering Cup, where they will take on Ohio Northern University at 12 p.m. Ursinus will tangle with New York University at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
