Wood's Second Half Goal Guides Utica to Third Shutout Victory
Utica, NY
Potsdam, N.Y. (9/14/2011) – The Utica College men’s soccer team moved its record to 3-1 on the year after senior captain Jonathan Wood netted a one-timer, following a cross from sophomore Chris Ferullo in the 66th minute, to lift the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over host Clarkson University Wednesday. All three of the Pioneers wins this season have come by way of a shut out and sophomore goalie Anthony Caruso stopped four shots in Wednesday’s victory.
Clarkson (1-4-1) was out shot by Utica 11-8 on the day and the Pioneers' earned a 6-3 corner kick advantage.
The first 45 minutes of play were dominated by the Pioneers, outshooting the home team 8-2, but they could not seem to find the back of the net until the second half. Wood’s first goal of the year could not have come at a better time as he beat Golden Knight goalie Saverino Spagnolo on the far post to give UC the 1-0 lead at 66:31.
Wood totaled a team-best three shots on goal and he now ranks second on the team with five points (three assists, one goal).
The Pioneers return home Saturday to the friendly confines of Charles A. Gaetano Stadium when they open up Empire 8 Conference play against regional power Nazareth College (3-1). The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Fans who cannot make it out to the contest can follow live video and stats on-line at www.ucpioneers.com.
